Located about 15 miles NW of Atlanta in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County.It was created by the Georgia legislature in 1834 and believed to have been named for the wife of Judge Thomas Cobb, the name sake of Cobb County, and others say it was named after the
city of Marietta, Ohio. During the Civil War, Marietta suffered major damage when it was part of the route of General Sherman's campaign to Atlanta taking many years to recover in its reconstruction period. Marietta is captivating with its rich history, abundance of well-preserved historical homes, and along with its collection of museums and parks such as Marietta Museum of History, Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, Root House Museum and the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Marietta is now a pleasant and forward looking bedroom community in the Atlanta Metro area. It has earned the reputation as a great place to live, to do business, has a good business infrastructure, good transportation intersected with I-75, I-285 and I-20, has a wide range of shopping, affordable housing, and possesses reasonable taxes with special tax breaks.
