| Powder Springs is located about 15 miles NW of Atlanta in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, near Marietta which is the county seat of Cobb County. Originally incorporated as Springville in 1838 in the lands of Cherokee Indian chiefs, Chief Nose and Chief Ana Kanasta(Sweetwater), when settlers came to this area to mine for gold. It was renamed Powder Springs in 1859 after some of the 7 springs found within the city limits where the water contains 26
minerals which turned the soil black like gun powder...thus the name Gunpowder Springs. Powder Springs is captivating with its rich history, abundance of well-preserved historical homes and buildings, The Seven Springs Museum/Powder Springs Park located in its downtown and adjacent to Marietta along with its collection of museums and parks such as Marietta Museum of History, Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art, Root House Museum, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and The Silver Comet Trail.
